Tactical Human Resources Evolves into Strategic Human Capital Management
In contrast to traditionally investing in automation technologies for better use of tangible assets, enterprises have begun to invest in optimizing human

labor resources by skill category  companies have embraced their labor forces and used them as a strategic differentiator. As products and technologies become commoditized in this information-based economy, companies are beginning to realize that the best way to differentiate themselves and create long-term strategic advantages over their competitors might be through their people. It is no longer what one owns that counts, but rather what one knows, which is particularly critical in information technology (IT) and similar professional

Discrete Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

Integrated Workforce Management (WFM) Platforms: Fact or Fiction? - Part 2

Part 1 of this blog series analyzed the major modules of integrated workforce management (WFM) suites that organizations can deploy to better schedule and assign work in their production and distribution facilities, and in retail stores. Concrete examples of commercially available products included those from Kronos and RedPrairie Corporation, given those two vendors’ notable

labor resources by skill category  schedules based on forecasted labor demand by considering the staffing needs, employee skill level/availability, and work rules (and by possibly sharing resources across stores and other facilities). Similar principles were explained in my recent series The Magic Behind Planning and Executing (Optimal) Service Supply Chains , which focused on the field service workforce. In fact, with its recent acquisition of AiPoint ’s  shift planning  capabilities, ClickSoftware Technologies hopes to expand beyond Read More

Mid-sized SCE Buys Small SCP: No Sure Bet on Short Term Profits

Leading supply chain execution (SCE) vendor, Manhattan Associates has recently announced its acquisition of Evant, a supply chain planning (SCP) company. Adjusting to a different type of supply chain application, gaining profitability, and maintaining high levels of customer care are some challenges facing the company.

Supply chain planning is a different beast, and in many ways a more complicated one. SCP entails sensitive turns of the crystal ball with many nuances over extended periods of time that are not clarified or rectified through work flow and process repetition. A whole different skill set is involved, with a unique array of algorithms Read More

The Magic Behind Planning and Executing (Optimal) Service Supply Chains - Part 2

Part 1 of this series established that service supply chains have many planning levels and time horizons, which can be roughly divided into the following: the immediate period around the day of service, and forecasting and planning for the day of service. My post then expanded on the various approaches to tame the challenges on the actual day of service. The most advanced

Needless to say, field resources should not be wasting their time and energy on figuring out best routes at the expense of performing valuable  customer service . Furthermore, the optimization must be performed across the entire workforce and not one route at a time. Street-level routing is not just about which resource should travel from Job A to Job B; the key to productivity improvement is about deciding whom to Read More

One Vendor’s Mission to Make Service Businesses Click - Part 2

Part 1 of this blog series introduced ClickSoftware Technologies (NASDAQ: CKSW). Until recently, the software company focused solely on workforce and service optimization solutions for large field service companies. Gradually, via both internal development and a few appetizing acquisitions in 2009, the vendor has added a few important growth engines, such as mobile computing

ClickMobile enables job detail notification from the field and allows for field updates even when service resources are out of wireless coverage. Assignments created in the abovementioned ClickSchedule module are dispatched to field devices based on configurable workflows while enabling real-time visibility into workforce activity, including job status and start and end time. Captured by Data

The benefits case for enterprise asset management (EAM) has been used to justify huge sums in EAM investment. But to understand this reasoning, it is necessary to explore how asset data can be used to further the aims of maintenance.

This citation and notification or penalty required corrective actions such as the establishment of a preventive maintenance program and training of maintenance personnel on potential failure recognition among a range of initiatives to be implemented. This is just one of a number of recent safety events where maintenance has been flagged Read More
